There was some question in session 24 about the war between Demons and devils. It is called the blood war and gets mentioned in the manual of the plains a great deal. Basically, Baatezu (LE) fight the Tanar’ri (CE), with the Yugoloths (NE) caught in the middle. It comes from the Planescape campaign setting, but I’ve used it in most of mine. It adds alot to any campaign when the celestials give you a mission to assasinate a Tanar’ri general to rebalance the blood war.

I thought that was all 2nd Ed stuff (which we play), created because of excessive political correctness brought on by fundamentalist christians targetting D&D as an evil satanic ritual (see Chick’s Tracts – almost funny but really rather disturbing). I understood that 3rd had gone back to Devils and Demons, perhaps just to annoy George Bush? But seriously is it really still Baatezu and Tanar’ri in 3rd?

Considering that TSR decided that they had to throw out the whole Devil/Demon thing I was mightily impressed by Planescape’s (IMO) serious improvement on that model. A marvellously damp and soggy idea of the multiverse.

We’re going to have to have a favourite background (FR, PS, GH etc) poll aren’t we 😀

Baatezu and Tanar’ri are subtypes in tthe monster manual, under the headings of devils and Demons respectivley. There are a few in the demon section that aren’t tanar’ri, but are actually constructs. I don’t remember with the devil section.

Right – thanks. It seems they didn’t want to throw the lot away.

Ah, but it still won’t be as good as 1E with demon porn, loosely hidden as “illustrations”… as a teenage boy, I remember that line art WELL! 😈

BTW, not looked at 1E MM for a LONG while – if all the pictures were just maybe showing a hint of nipple, please, don’t ditroy my fond memories… 😳

The whole debate about the Blood War ? It was just the characters. I am pretty sure the players are ABSOLUTELY familiar with the story. Other than Lindsay, I think the guys pretty much are old-time in the mythology.

ok, it didn’t seem in character to me. Just adding it for anyone who didn’t happen to know.

I think you could ask any of the players. Trust me, they know. Otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to have such a silly conversation about it. Whilwhirrin making it so simplistic and then Tharus denying it so well in character (because really – no Prime cleric should have advanced knowledge of this) Seemed all very much in character to me.

Ok, well, I’m not focussed all the time I’m listening. I’m looking up stuff in the books and keeping the dogs off the bed. I just heard a bit of the conversation and thought hey, that sounds like the blood war, then didn’t remember the name coming up.

Sorry to all the players for not realizing you were in character. Anyway, now we have a thread on the forums to discuss any future demony encounters if you feel like it.

speaking of the Blood War, and Planescape for that matter – I’d like to recommend to everyone to PLAY PLANESCAPE TORMENT. It’s a rockingly good game. Probably one of the finest CRPGs ever made.

PS:T is a damned fine CRPG, if you’re willing to read the reams of juicy text it spits at you. Be aware, though, that if you’re using a newfangled videocard the game might develop some visual errors, particularly with spell effects. The only solution I’ve found is using old video drivers (61.77 for you GeForce users), and while they made the game run smoothly, they killed the rest of my system.

That said, even with weirded spell effects the game is a jewel. I find myself replaying it and the two Fallouts every 6-10 months. 😉

*sniff* I can’t play my copy…*snuffle*…I lent it to someone ages ago, and only got 3 out of 4 discs back…*sniff*…but I only found out a couple of months ago when I wanted to play it again…*snuffle*…and I can’t remember who borrowed it, and no-one is owning up to it…*sniff*

Aha! So you’d recommend it to someone who only started playing Neverwinter Nights a month or two ago (thanks to the bargain bucket at the supermarket) and is mightily impressed by that?

I love Planescape. One of these days I’ll get up the courage to run it, “cant” and all.

    [lurk]

I’d recommend it to anyone who likes a good story. The game uses the Infinity Engine (Baldur’s Gate & Icewind Dale used this), so it’s old but functional. I have yet to see a plot in a CRPG as intricate and well-crafted as the one in Torment.
