Many years ago I used to play Dungeons and Dragons at university.

What I remember most vividly about it was the massive contrast between the heroic, powerful, highly-skilled, combat-trained characters we were playing, and the incompetent, strategically-challenged, plan-phobic fools that we, as real people, were.

This of course led to much comedy and laughter as we got ourselves into the most ridiculous situations and had to come up with outrageous plans that you would never see in a classic fantasy story.

    This got me thinking.

What would it be like if a real person were actually suddenly dropped into a classic High Fantasy world like Middle Earth or a Dungeons and Dragons campaign?

How would they survive? What would the realities of living there involve? Would modern technology be of any use?

If the worse were to happen, to save themselves, to save their friends… could they kill?

I decided I had to see how this would play out as a story.

After a couple of years and a lengthy commute on the train I have finished and it is now available on Amazon for Kindle:

    No More Heroes

    Any comments/thoughts are appreciated.

Congratulations 🙂 It is awesome to see someone getting their work out there.

I will add the book to my pile of things to read 🙂 – and so should everyone else…

You are scholars and gentlemen 🙂

(or gentlewomen… maybe I’ll just stick with gentlefolk)

Looks interesting, Ashles, I’ll definitely grab a copy for my upcoming holiday, let you know what I think! Congrats 🙂

PS that’s actually a similar premise to my own novel from a few years back, The Ancients. I’m sure the books pan out very differently but I’d be interested to see what you thought of mine too… maybe we could exchange reviews on Amazon (unless, y’know, we hate each other’s books, then we can just do it by PM 😉 )

No More Heroes: A book about a office worker from Brighton who goes on fabulous adventures.
Author: An office clerk from Brighton.

The Ancients: A book about a veterinarian who goes on fabulous adventures.
    Author: A veterinarian.

Hmm… Yes, there should be a basis for comparison, there. 🙂

I’m not an office clerk from Brighton 🙂

(although I have been one in the distant past – I think I lasted a whole 5 weeks – Howie’s office on the Old Steine is based very directly on my brief stint working in a TSB credit card call centre there back in about 1995)

Have bought it from the Amazon UK site:

    The Ancients

Will definitely give it a read.

Isn’t that one of the classic techniques to make your novels more believable and engaging? By drawing on your own personal experience, the story becomes more realistic – which might then (hopefully) carry over into the more fantastic parts of the story. Pretty sure Lordof1 did the same with his book, using his veterinary experience to convince the reader that the main character is an actual vet.

Um… the Ancients doesn’t have any vets in it, PM 🙂 You’re thinking of my other books. I did draw on my experience as a taciturn knight (not my day job) however.

Just bought No More Heroes, Ashles. That’s my holiday reading sorted!

    So, to clarify:

No More Heroes: A book about a office worker from Brighton who goes on fabulous adventures.
Author: Not an office clerk from Brighton.

The Ancients: Not a book about a veterinarian who goes on fabulous adventures.
    Author: A veterinarian.
