#98912 What makes a game great?

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 19 July 2017 - 01:06 AM

What makes a tabletop RPG great?Regardless of which tabletop roleplaying game is your favourite, everyone who has ever played an RPG, whether as a GM or as a player has got a story to tell about it. Whether they are perfectly timed critical hits, hilarious critical failures, epic stories, life-long friendships or perfectly rounded characters, everyone has something to say about “this great game I played in once”.

With that in mind I wanted to see if there was some commonality about these ‘great’ games. Is there a recipe for success? Can GMs follow a step-by-step guide and create a game that people will be talking about for generations to come? We asked our fans and followers what they thought made a game great and here are the results.

First off, we asked people how much they felt certain aspects of a game contributed to making it great. What follows are the game elements from most popular to least popular with their weighted scores. To be clear, we weren’t asking what made an RPG system great but what made an individual game run by a GM great.

An engaging story – 2.78
A talented GM – 2.68
A well thought out and fleshed out world/setting – 2.51
The opportunity to develop your character – 2.49
Players that you get along with – 2.41
Playing a system that you know and understand – 2.27
Excitement and high stakes – 2.22
Funny moments – 2.12
A sandbox type environment – 2.10
Puzzle solving – 1.90
Politics and intrigue – 1.90
Lots of combat – 1.80
A clear beginning, middle and end to the game – 1.73

While the results don’t show an obvious winner, it is clear that an engaging story and a GM with the talent to carry the story off and help players remain immersed in their world for the duration of the game are the keys to success.

While it doesn’t show any huge surprises in terms of what people look for in a game, I was a little surprised to see that “players that you get along with” and “lots of combat” were as low as they were.

In addition to this, we asked respondents if they had any other comments on what they felt made a game great. Though we can’t show all the responses, below are a few of the more thought-provoking ones:

“Players who play well”
“Snacks”
“Allowing players to be anything they want and develop their characters however they want”
“An environment for playing that has very few distractions”
“A well-balanced adventure in which each player has a chance to shine”

What are your thoughts on what makes a game great? Is there anything you think we have missed or anything you disagree with? The survey is now closed but you can still have your say on the ICE forum.

#95664 What I thought of… Daredevil

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 13 April 2015 - 12:31 PM

Daredevil Netflix TV seriesFirst some background: I am not a daredevil fan. I know very little about the character and his storyline. In addition, due to my TV situation I have not watched any TV shows of this genre (The Flash, Arrow, Gotham or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). I have done my best to keep up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but have missed a couple of bits and watched things in the wrong order in some cases (which bugs me a lot).

My intention was to watch the first episode of the series and then write a review of it. However, having created a first draft of the review I then sat down and watched the second, third and fourth episodes (each time rewriting the review ever so slightly). It has helped give my review a bit more depth and also serves as a testament to how watchable the show is.

Daredevil

The show is set after the events of the first Avengers movie. As Hell’s Kitchen looks to rebuild after the devastation, crime and corruption are rife and Matt Murdock (AKA Daredevil) has had enough and sets about cleaning up the city. Episodes are sixty minutes long and are currently only available on Netflix.

My thoughts

One of my favourite things about the show is that it avoids being too much of a superhero programme. It portrays Matt as much more of a human than other film based Marvel characters. This is shown when a bad guy comments “if he had an iron suit or a magic hammer I would understand why he’s causing us so much of a problem”. We see Matt get beaten up, fail, doubt himself and even the bad guys appear more well-rounded and fleshed out than most other comic book villains.

Despite my lack of knowledge on the character and his storyline, I don’t feel that my enjoyment of the show was affected by my inexperience. I imagine it would be very easy for programmes such as these to become so self-referential that newcomers are at a bit of a disadvantage. No doubt there were lots of cool Easter eggs and in jokes for people that know Daredevil better than me, but for the most part I never felt like I was missing something.

I do think that people will struggle to understand a lot of what is going on unless you watch each and every episode. However, Daredevil is only available on Netflix, the perfect medium for ensuring that viewers don’t miss a thing and can watch the show at their leisure.

The action is good, if slightly gory at times (I’d think twice about allowing anyone under 12 to watch it) and the show manages to avoid being too focussed on the martial arts that Daredevil (and apparently every one of his enemies) is an expert in. There are a few fight scenes that go on a little too long but on the whole it is a nice mix of cerebral crime fighting, mystery unravelling and martial arts awesomeness.

One thing that did bug me a little was that I don’t feel they gave enough background to Matt and his abilities. I’d like to know more about why he can fight like he can, how he honed his skills at reading the truth in people’s voices and being aware of his surroundings just by listening. Each episode they reveal a little more, but four episodes in and I still don’t feel that I know enough.

Final thoughts

Daredevil is good. Not Earth shattering, not the best thing I’ve ever seen, but good. Marvel have done really well in differentiating it from their film franchises and making it offer something completely different. It is exciting, well-acted, well written and above all, entertaining. Even if you’re not into superhero films/shows or comic books, I’d recommend giving it a go. For the most part it feels more like a crime drama/gritty vigilante justice piece than a Marvel superhero show.

Rating

7/10 – Worth a watch even if you’re not into superhero films

Any of you lucky enough to be following Iron Crown Enterprises on Facebook may have seen a recent post about Lord of the Rings (don’t get your hopes up MERP is NOT coming back). While I have heard many reasons to refuse the theory put forward in the post, I can’t stop thinking about it so I thought I would add it to the newsletter to encourage a debate on the topic. Read the post here.

Catch up on what you’ve missed with this month’s Director’s Briefing.

ROLEMASTER

We are pleased to announce the imminent release of ERA for Rolemaster. If you’ve spent any time on the ICE forum recently you have no doubt seen the thread dedicated to its playtesting, feedback and revisions, well now it is done. We’re just finalising the file upload to RPGNow and we will let you know when it is finished. ERA is a multi-functional e-support package with a number of capabilities including:

  • Create characters step by step then level them up and update them as your games progress
  • Manage adventures, handle combat, skill resolution, spell casting, resistances, resting and more
  • Watch each character status (hits, pp’s, stun, bleed, penalties) and check skills and spells (including full descriptions) from a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
  • Customise skills, professions, races, cultures, attack tables, criticals, spells and talents and flaws

THE ORDER OF THE IRON CROWN

You may have noticed that the Iron Crown Enterprises blog has recently seen a flurry of activity around members of the Order of the Iron Crown running games, attending conventions and generally promoting ICE products to the big wide world.

This trend is set to continue as Iron Crown start prepping run an OFFICIAL ICE STALL at this year’s Dragonmeet in London, UK. We’ll soon be releasing an e-mail outlining our plans for the event, who will be there and when and how you can get involved. In the mean time, if you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a member of the Order of the Iron Crown and recieving rewards just for playing and promoting ICE products, get in touch and we’ll get you all signed up.

SETTINGS

It is all go in Shadow World with Terry K. Amthor working on a number of projects at once (but what’s new there). The adventure module ‘Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn’ is nearing completion with Terry “just tweaking a final adventure” and awaiting artwork.

Aside from that he has been working on a new module for NE Jaiman (similar to Xa-ar), which has already reached 75 pp of text alone, and tinkering with Eidolon and Emer II revisions.

PARTNERS

Ready for playtesting at last, the folks at our sister site Metal Express have released new ship displays and rules for the dreaded Night Brood for the Silent Death game, including the six ships that have for so many years now had no ship display available!

That’s right, loyal fans of Silent Death can find ship displays for the Bright Thorn, the Skree, the Scarab, the Eel, the formidable Monarch, and the insidious Worm Pod at long last, so now you can expand your Night Brood swarms and even take on Terran Warhounds (and take them out!) as only the vile Night Brood can.

#89985 Director’s Briefing – April 2014

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 02 April 2014 - 05:36 AM

Welcome to the thirty-fourth Briefing and the fourth scheduled Briefing for 2014.

Encroachment in its last throes

The real-world battle has continued. The enemy sent in reinforcements -forty mock exam scripts, ten dissertation literature reviews, and eleven software project reports (where unlimited wordcount meant one of them was 100 pages long -definitely Super Large report). I am, however, still standing. The remaining lecture count is four still to write, with two already in outline form. So it’s now a matter of pressing home my advantage and finishing them – very like a role-playing battle where the final foes of an attacking horde need to be slain and everyone (GM included) wants it done and dusted so that player-characters can get their loot, get in their healing and the GM can get the plot moving again.

(Obviously there will be some future skirmishes when the marking for the summer turns up, but that should be manageable as I won’t be preparing lectures and teaching at the same time.)

Shadow World

Terry has been working on Emer 2 and on an adventure module – I have an initial draft of the latter to download for my first review. I have had an opportunity to do my own editorial review of the new “Shade” module draft from Brian Hanson – it is looking like it will become a great addition to the Shadow World line in due course – and this is now with Terry for his review.

Rolemaster

The RMSS/FRP dataset for the Rolemaster Combat Minion is now live. As some of the tables for RMSS/FRP are in books where we don’t have good build files, the initial set is essentially RMSS/FRP Arms Law but tables from the Armory, Martial Arts Companion, Fire & Ice, etc., will be added to this dataset. Keep an eye on the forums for progress and latest news.

The next software offering for Rolemaster will be the ERA package from Maximiliano Tabacman. This is a character creation, management and inventory program, among other features. It will be going into a public beta test around mid-April, so again watch the forums for the latest news and check out the links to video demos.

The unified RM team are currently shuttling the Arms Law & Character Law and Spell Law drafts around at a very rapid pace so that they can feed in comments and capture knock-on impacts of changes. Very heartening to see.

HARP and HARP SF (and spacemaster)

On HARP, some combat data regarding the new missile and thrown weapons has been discovered to be missing from the enhanced Martial Law. It transpires that this data was never in the original version either, so analysing the weapons to generate the data is now on my todo list.

Some people have already started OCRing old Spacemaster products in advance of me being ready to organise the process (in a way that will avoid duplication of effort yet ensure that we get them all). As soon as I can, I will be getting on top of this. (My commute is great for reviewing work (as long as the apps are happy with the document formatting), writing Briefings and actual rpg material, but not so great for responding to forum posts or emails -there are stretches of the journey where there just is no signal.)

Until next time

Back to the real-world as my train heads in to Ipswich station. The next scheduled Briefing will be in May.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Director, Guild Companion Publications Ltd.

#89379 Iron Crown Enterprises’ Newsletter – February 2014

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 25 February 2014 - 11:44 AM

To receive this monthly newsletter direct to your inbox, sign up to our MAILING LIST now.

I must admit that ordinarily February isn’t my favourite month. It is the Monday of the months. The memory of Christmas and New Year has faded, the hope and promise of a new year have dwindled to be replaced by the creeping sensation that it is in fact exactly the same as the new year and the summer is still a long way off. However, this year has been different…

February has seen new releases, information about upcoming releases, exciting news and updates and I for one am unreasonably excited about the coming months and what they will bring…

Catch up on what you’ve missed with this month’s Director’s Briefing.

ROLEMASTER

This month saw the release of the long awaited Rolemaster Combat Minion.

Rolemaster Combat Minion is a web application used by the GM to help track combat encounters. It speeds game-play considerably by performing all necessary dice rolls and table look-ups. It also handles all end-of-round upkeep, keeps track of all PC and NPC/creature wounds, and performs perception, move & maneuver and attunement rolls.

While the software itself is available for free, the data tables for Rolemaster Classic is now available through the OneBookShelf Network.

HARP

In this month’s Director’s Briefing Guild Companion Publications’ Director, Nicholas Caldwell posed the following questions which we would like your opinion on:

1) would you be interested in a HARP SF Imperium setting sourcebook and possible followups?

2) irrespective of the answer, do we have any fans with time and software on their hands to do the OCR / text extraction over the next few months so that we can more easily restore the Imperium (as a HARP SF setting perhaps and a definite future unified Spacemaster setting)?

3) Would you be interested in “thematic” sourcebooks for HARP SF and the Tintamar universe that focus on a style of play such as military, exploration, trader, covert ops, etc.

Visit OUR FORUM and have your say.

SETTINGS

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you can’t have missed the release of the brand new Emer III setting material for Shadow World. A huge thanks to everyone who has bought and reviewed it and played a part in helping it attain ‘Silver Pick’ status and keeping it in the RPGNow top 10 for over a month.

If you haven’t yet got your copy you can buy it now from RPGNow for just $18.

In addition, I am pleased to announce that the master files for Emer III have been accepted by OneBookShelf/Lightning Source and we are expecting the proofs to be delivered in the very near future. Barring any problems with the proofs, we are hoping to have the hardcover and softcover copies of Emer III available VERY soon.

PARTNERS

Here at Iron Crown Enterprises, we want to provide all our fans with everything they need to get the most out of their gaming. That is why we support a suite of e-support packages. You can read all about them on our brand new e-support page on our website.

One great piece of news which we received this month was that the brilliant XP Tracker for Rolemaster will soon be updated to work with iOS7.

XP Tracker is an easy to use app that removes the need for scratch paper in gaming. Normally you have your Character sheet, core books and tons of scratch paper that you use for notes and calculations. XPT was created to help speed up gaming while allowing you to track everything on the fly.

#88646 Director’s Briefing – February 2014

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 07 February 2014 - 12:16 PM

Welcome to the thirty-second Briefing and the second scheduled Briefing for 2014.

Encroachment begins

As I expected, my real-world job has commenced its encroachment upon my evenings and weekends, with a sneak attack known as exam and assignment marking (including second marking for colleagues which was an unexpected bureaucratic ambush). I am now in a standard melee, battling it out to build lecture material and new assignments faster than I have to deliver them.

On the long-term plan of gaming software through student projects, my combined business/IT degree passed its second hurdle and subject to validation (third hurdle) should commence in September 2015.

My GCP time will now shift into a time-sliced regime of contractual necessities, project phase organisation, and draft product review.

Shadow World

As I hope you are all aware, Emer 3 is now available as a pdf at an introductory discount of 16 USD (full price of 18 USD from 22 Feb). Terry is collating the minor errata and we will update the pdf in the next couple of weeks – if you buy before the update, just go into your OneBookShelf account and redownload the file. The print versions will incorporate the errata corrections and will be available either at the tail end of this month or in March.

Terry is himself time-slicing on Eidolon and Emer 2 for their enhanced editions, so I am expecting that I will be reviewing at least one of them in March. I have some contractual necessities still to sort out regarding the third-party sourcebooks.

Rolemaster

The RM Classic dataset for Rolemaster Combat Minion is now available for purchase from OneBookShelf. The Rolemaster Combat Minion engine is a free web app that coupled with the dataset, will streamline your Rolemaster combat encounters. Attack results can be calculated with full table lookup – no more crossindexing on attack tables and flipping to a critical table – and all wounds applied, tracked and saved to your own database of PCs, NPCs and monsters. This is a revolution in the Rolemaster gaming experience.

You can try an evaluation version free of charge – so give it a go and see if the RCM is a game changer for you.

The RMSS/FRP dataset will be released in the next week or so, assuming no snags with the go-live of the RM Classic dataset arise.

HARP and HARP SF (and Spacemaster)

On the ICE forums, there have been a number of interesting discussions regarding the old Spacemaster Imperium setting and future avenues of expansion for HARP SF and its Tintamar universe.

The Imperium setting remains a popular universe for Spacemaster fans, not only in discussion threads, but also one that continues to generate sales through the collection of rule books, supplements and adventures that we sell as scanned pdfs on OneBookShelf. Terry Amthor, one of the cocreators of the Imperium setting, has expressed interest in being involved again with it. Resurrecting the Imperium as a Spacemaster setting has two issues – the first that a unified Spacemaster rules system does not yet exist, the second that the existing setting is buried in those pdfs. The first issue should eventually be resolved and HARP SF could also be used as the rules engine; the second issue is a need for some serious OCRing and text extraction of the existing pdfs. I have two questions for you as fans – 1) would you be interested in a HARP SF Imperium setting sourcebook and possible followups? (http://www.ironcrown...p?topic=14090.0 ">Post your thoughts on the ICE forums) and 2) irrespective of the answer, do we have any fans with time and software on their hands to do the OCR / text extraction over the next few months so that we can more easily restore the Imperium (as a HARP SF setting perhaps and a definite future unified Spacemaster setting)? http://www.ironcrown...p?topic=14091.0">Post your thoughts on the ICE forums.

In another forum topic, the suggestion has been made about “thematic” sourcebooks for HARP SF and the Tintamar universe. Instead of, or perhaps in addition to, sourcebooks on a sector of space such as the Federation Sector or the Nexus Sector, we should have sourcebooks that focus on a style of play so military, exploration, trader, covert ops, etc., and support this with material for the Tintamar universe, which could potentially be used in other settings. This is an intriguing possibility – what do you think? http://www.ironcrown...p?topic=14092.0">Post your thoughts on the ICE forums.

Cyradon

I have reviewed the final draft of “Escort Duty” and it was (as I expected) really great. It is now in “safe” mode, awaiting finalised monster stat blocks. The final draft of “M for Murder” still requires my attention.

Until next time

My time-sliced life continues – my hope is that I will have sufficient time slices to get some manuscripts reviewed, some contractuals completed, and TGA#4 checked over before handover to layout phase. The next scheduled Briefing will be in March.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

#87103 Director’s Briefing – December 2013

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 09 December 2013 - 06:21 AM

Welcome to the thirtieth Briefing and twelfth scheduled Briefing for 2013.

Nearly off the treadmill

Down to three lectures and one assignment still to produce for this semester, so there will be a serious slackening of the real-world treadmill, although two new course modules need working on for next semester. My long-term plan to create future gaming software through student projects has moved a trifle closer as my proposal for a new combined business and IT degree at my university has passed its first hurdle.

HARP

No updates to report from HARP this month.

Cyradon

I still have the second (and potentially final) drafts of “M for Murder” (which I think needs a different title) and “Escort Duty” to review – though the first drafts of both were so good that I expect it will not take long to approve them and put them in safe mode awaiting monster stat blocks.

Rolemaster

The Rolemaster Combat Minion software has had a relatively painless public playtest. Meanwhile a quartet of volunteers came together to create the RMSS/FRP dataset and had that ready in a matter of days. So assuming there are no minor snags, we should have the Rolemaster Combat Minion with both Classic and RMSS/FRP combat files available for purchase sometime this month. If we assume some minor snags or holiday preparations intervening, then it may shift into January.

The RMU team have been putting in the hours on the second beta manuscripts, with really good progress on all four manuscripts – we are combining Arms Law and Character Law into a single volume. The ideal result will be to get all four out at once for beta testing, though if necessary I will settle for Arms Law/Character Law and Spell Law leading the second beta charge.

Shadow World

On Emer 3, the RMSS stats are done and just need a perusal from me as a final check before I hand them over to Terry and we make a big push to get a pdf version of Emer 3 out. Both Terry and I have reviewed the module currently entitled “Priest King of Shade” and we will be getting it formally under contract – though it will be getting a new name. Terry is still reviewing the Lethys module and starting an editorial pass.

A reminder that our call for Shadow World adventures is still open – see October’s Director’s Briefing for details.

Until next time

I have many things to do, including making the annual royalty payments on some older products to authors and artists, and then its back to work in the real and gaming industry worlds. The next scheduled Briefing will be in the new year, so all that remains for me to do is to wish you all a Merry Christmas (or other holiday of your choosing) and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

This month has been a funny one. It may have seemed a bit quiet on the surface but there has been a whole host of things going on in the background. I for one have got a huge list of things to be getting on with, so I will keep this brief…

Catch up on what you’ve missed with this month’s Director’s Briefing.

ROLEMASTER

Last month we announcement that we were working on a brand new e-support product called the Rolemaster Combat Minion. We have now made some great progress on the product and it is now available for playtesting.

You can now access the web app by following the link on THIS PAGE. Once you’ve been on and had a go, let us know what you think on our dedicated Rolemaster Combat Minion thread on our forum.

The free web app comes with 6 Rolemaster weapon/critical tables and we will be making more databases and tables available through RPGNow once the final release is made.

HARP

This month saw the release of AutoHARP Fantasy: College of Magics and AutoHARP SF Xtreme. Both of these are currently still available at the special introductory price of $5.00. This offer ends soon however so don’t delay.

For those of you not acquainted with AutoHARP, it combines a character creator and a combat tracker to help make running your HARP game even quicker and easier.

Both AutoHARP Fantasy and AutoHARP SF, along with a number of add ons are available at RPGNow.

SETTINGS

Emer III the edging ever closer to release. The page layout is nearly done and there is now only a few pieces of art and a few stats left to do. Terry K. Amthor continues working on this and a whole host of other projects including reviewing two very promising manuscripts from other authors.

The revisions of Emer I and II and Eidolon continue, though at the moment they are playing second fiddle to the work on Emer III. In addition Terry is working on a brand new book set in NE Jaiman.

PARTNERS

13Mann

Our partners over in Germany are currently working on their next Rolemaster release, “Erweiterung: Mentalismus” (Mentalism Companion). They haven’t set a date yet for an expected release (much like ourselves, the good folks at 13mann are perfectionists) but as a teaser they have released a preview of the cover art which can be seen here: 13Mann: Rolemaster.

I think you’ll agree, it looks brilliant!

#86497 Director’s Briefing – November 2013

Posted by RPGMP3 Newsbot on 14 November 2013 - 12:54 PM

Welcome to the twenty-ninth Briefing and eleventh scheduled Briefing for 2013.

Delayed in the Real World

As you might know, I upgraded myself to a Lecturer position (tenured in North American jargon) over the summer. The downside of my new post is that being a new lecturer, I have no stockpile of lovingly crafted lecture materials with which to educate my students. So I’ve been fiendishly busy creating lectures, class exercises, homework exercises, assignments, and exams as well as doing the actual teaching and dealing with admin. This has limited my ability to get fun stuff done as the creation treadmill has steadily eaten more and more commutes, evenings and weekends in addition to the proper day job hours. The treadmill will not last forever, however. At some point in the future, I hope to be able to harness my cohorts of eager students into building programs for me (to support Rolemaster and HARP) though I might need to inveigle myself into teaching on the Computer Games Design degree first!

Fortunately me being temporarily overwhelmed does not prevent freelancers from getting on with their projects.

HARP & HARP SF

The second set of PoD copies of HARP College of Magics turned out to be fine in terms of art and text, and so College of Magics is now available in pdf, softcover, and hardcover.

AutoHARP has been released to version 1.0.4 with new databases for College of Magics and HARP SF Xtreme being released in tandem at introductory prices. Version 1.0.4 also has updates for the UNIX version.

Cyradon

I have second (and potentially final) drafts of “M for Murder” (which I think needs a different title) and “Escort Duty” to review.

Rolemaster

The big news for Rolemaster is the imminent release of the Rolemaster Combat Minion for public playtest to support all your Rolemaster combat needs. There are a lot of people out there who refuse to play or GM Rolemaster because they find grappling with attack tables and critical tables and d100 rolls too hard or too fiddly. Some of them will even claim that you need a computer to run Rolemaster . For all of them, we now have the solution to their problem – a killer app for Rolemaster combat. The Rolemaster Combat Minion engine will be free to download and will come with a selection of combat tables for trial purposes.

(Naturally those of us who can cheerfully handle d100 rolls, attack tables, critical tables, etc., using just the physical books, some dice and pen-and-paper may find it incredibly useful!)

Shadow World

Terry completed his additional adventure material for Emer 3 and I have already given feedback. The RMSS stat blocks are underway and Terry has made great progress in getting the rest of the layout whipped into shape. I have completed my review of the Lethys and Priest King of Shade module “works in progress”; they await Terry getting a proper read of both.

A reminder that our call for Shadow World adventures is still open – see last month’s Director’s Briefing for details.

Until next time

Back to work in the real and gaming industry worlds. The next scheduled Briefing will be in December.

Best wishes,
Nicholas
