Once again I find myself a few episodes behind.  I will have to catch up this week at work.

Just got to the smoke on the horizon in this last episode, and havent read that part of the adventure yet.  All through the discussion I was wondering if anyone would bring up the point that their plan was essentially to head out into the wilderness, cross their fingers and hope.  That they were not taking any action to actually incite a pirate attack, just hoping narrative causality would create one at an opportune time for them.  Also, no solution to how to make sure it was the boss' ship rather than one of his many minion ships was brought up.  The possibility didnt even seem to be considered that they might not find a pirate by just sitting by some ghostrock, or that they might run into one of his followers rather than the big man himself.

Not a complaint, just something I thought was interesting.  The assumptions different player groups with different GMs will make about their world.  I would have pointed those holes out to my players as I think the characters would notice them, and I would have had them roll a random dice to see if they got the boss vs a minion if they had found a pirate without taking action to find the boss specifically.  Perhaps that makes me a horrible monster like Patrick says but my personal sense of the world as a living real place outside the view of the players would be hindered if I didnt have some sort of action they were (however unlikely) successful at to hang the plot narrative on.  However poor I am at showing it I want a world I am running to feel like it has some depth and weight outside of sight of the PCs, which makes some narrative conveniences hard for me to feel ok using.

You make very valid points, and I admit that I never really thought about them.  I think your point about the different players and GMs is valid, and I'd add the physical gaming setting too. For us, our sessions are shorter than most other groups (since we play at lunch), and so I try to avoid long drawn-out "what if?" back-and-forths that often end in analysis paralysis.

I think the game/milieu also plays a part. In Adventure! and the Colymar campaign, I hinted to the players that they should "just do it", rather than come up with a complicated plan with multiple contingencies that won't survive contact with the enemy. I think Deadlands has a similar vibe, so even had I thought about your points, I would choose to play things very fast and loose (perhaps in this case I played too much so....).

I will also add player experience to the pot. I have some very new tabletop RPG players, and I want them to enjoy the game, not have to shoot down every idea with "it won't work because...".  As long as we're all having fun, why let "reality" interfere? :-)

It did not feel off for your group.  Totally a matter of group culture and personal preferences.  It was just another one of those moments that came up for me in comparing my groups and those of others who post actual plays.

I have visions of the tiny lady of the night just 'persuading' every opponent to forfeit in exchange for services to be rendered later.
